Most of the stuff in Forever 21 is trash but if you search through the piles of shoddily made trends you can find a few gems. This dress piqued my interest in the store because the shilloutte is similar to that seen in Mui Mui SP08 collection. However, I hesitated to buy the dress. With more than enough party outfits in my wardrobe this one needed to translate to daytime. A black blazer and some futuristic glasses helped to keep me from looking like I was heading to the club.

Time for a switch.

My style is a mixture of bright prints, neutral separates inspired by my preppy high school environment (Midwestern boarding school) and my hipsterish college environment (New York City). I usually focus on one facet of my style until I get sick of it. My outfits have consisted of tons of bright prints these past few weeks. Today I went with some neutrals instead and added one bright accessory. Focusing on one aspect of my wardrobe for weeks at a time and then moving to another theme makes all of my pieces seem new and fresh to me at some point and time. I paired this outfit with my Marc by Marc Jacobs bag and Prada sunnies.

Running Errands

Today I headed to work to see if someone could pick up my shift, got my eyebrows threaded (long over due), and went to Starbucks to study. I choose something lightweight since it was kinda of hot today. This dress can be thrown on bc it doesn't require much effort in terms of styling. The print is bold so the accessories were kept minimal with simple studs and my black Gryson for Target bag. I love wearing this dress as it reminds me of the great deal I got. The dress originally cost $200 and I got it 75% of at $50. I own another T-bags dress and am def a fan of the line.

Any thoughts on how to style this especially in the cooler months?

A Look I'm SICK Of

I am tired of the Rayban Wayfarer. Admittedly this may because I lost mine last week and am jealous as an ex-member of the Wayfarer club. However I think it's more than that. When debating whether to repurchase the aforementioned sunnies I began to mull over a few thoughts.

1.Popping a pair of these sunglasses onto a simple outfit used to denote coolness now similar to skinny jeans everyone and their mother has them so their mystic has been lost.

2.In April I saw a 50 year old man rocking the sunglasses. While I do go to school in NYC, when a 50 year old man starts to rock something it is no longer edgy and cool.

3. The Jonas Brothers a bubble gum pop boy band have been spotted wearing the Wayfarers at almost event they attend. I know this because my little sister is a devoted fan.
So.... Old men and teen pop stars have been spotted wearing the look. It might be time to move on. My new favorite artsy black glasses are a heart pair similar to what Nicole Richie has been seen wearing.

I am sure circular frames are on the horizon as the Olsen's are fans. As the famous twins go so does the rest of the fashion industry...does boho ring a bell?
Although I missed out on the infamous Chanel pair I am looking forward to buying similar glasses by Miu Miu this season.
So what do you think are the Wayfarers old news? And if so what is in contention for new edgy sunnies?

Studs Studs Everywhere

I am generally not a shoe person even though"shoes are the new handbags". I'd rather spend my money on a designer pair of sunglasses and rock Payless then splurge on Loubs. But every once and while a pair of shoes catches my eyes, last season it was the Burberry studded sandals. I couldn't past a newsstand stand or look at an editorial without being reminded that I lacked the requisite grand to obtain the object of my lust. By the next season they had trickled down to the high street and i was able to find a pair for $15. (At this dingy store off of 34th St for all you New Yorkers. I also found an amazing pair of gladiators for $5 which inspired a man to come up to me and offer to give me a massage after telling me about his fetish for feet. But that's another story.)

Hardly the Burberry sandals but close enough to satisfy my penchant. This season I noticed the designers have decided to put the stud trend on over drive.

This Gucci shoe is a gaudy way of interpreting the trend. It removes all of the punk infused elements of the Burberry sandal and makes them overly glam. Maybe the shoe isn't ugly but it surely isn't right for my my style. It surprises me that Gucci would come out with this sandal since they are leaning away from their traditional glamazon image and toward a more boho chich one.

On the other hand I love Christian Louboutin's take on the trend. While the gold is a bit much for me, the black version of the sandal is def worth eat beans and rice for a month for. Although the shoe is def more glamorous than the Burberry the spikes keep the shoe edgy. Plus I love the dominatrix influence as I have been know to play that role every once and awhile:)

Pete Wentz

Currently I am obsessed with Pete Wentz. He is one of the most fashionable and unique male celebrities around now. By managing to make punk look colorful, wearable, and approachable Pete has developed his own style. Call it punk lite. DKNY has recognized Pete's talent and commissioned Pete to launch a juniors sportswear line for Fall 07. I can't wait to snatch up a hoodie.

Pete is known for colorful tees and hoodies. He manages to express style without seeming over the top or effeminate like most well dressed men.

Eye shadow even works on Pete. Possibly because his extensive tattoos balance the femininity of the eyeshadow.

As a product of the Chicago suburbs like Pete, I like to incoporate hints of punk into my wardrobe with vans, chucks, and black nail polish (I wore it before it became trendy). I'm trying to find a Pete inspiried hoodie, although the singer's line is dissapoiting. Hopefully, his line w/DKNY will be better.

Spring Break offers the savvy dresser an opportunity to break out and go wild—in a manner of speaking. Whether you want to create a new style persona or avoid looking like a tourist, a working knowledge of clothing customs is imperative. Here is a guide to help you decode dressing from NYC to Haiti.
Several areas in NYC are known for their inhabitants’ distinct style of dressing. The area closest to home is the Upper East Side, extending north from 59th to 96th Street and east from Central Park to the East River. Upper East Siders are not afraid to display the wealth that their neighborhood is associated with. Fur, designer bags, and town cars saturate the area.
If you plan on visiting the famed Upper East Side designer boutiques or legendary department stores, you’ll want to dress the part. But don’t despair; services are available to help you look like a Park Avenue princess for a day. The website Bag Borrow or Steal (www.bagborroworsteal.com) loans designer handbags to aspiring heiresses. The classic Chanel flap bag and the trendy Marc Jacobs Stam bag cost $100 dollars a week to rent. If you want to purchase the aforementioned bags new, you’ll have to part with $1000. The proverbial Spring Break occurs in slightly warmer places than NYC. The West Indies, which include Jamaica and Haiti, is a popular Spring Break destination. They are the perfect location to escape the doldrums of New York black and grey. Here bright clothing is standard. It’s normal to see a man wearing green shoes with a pink top. Vladimir Michel, a 21 year old Haitian-American, said West Indian style was originally driven by economics. “Haitians don’t care. They buy whatever they have on their backs.” Originally West Indians dressed in clashing apparel because most people couldn’t afford to match. Now vivid colors are a matter of cultural pride; upper class Haitians wear them as well. Vladimir warns tourists to leave jewelry at home because kidnappers usually target jewelry wearers.
Whether you’re traveling to a new country or staying in New York City, Spring Break is the perfect chance to break out and explore a new style. I was in and out of the hospital all last week. One plus was tons of free time to pour over gratis spring fashion issues I received as gifts. Here are the season's trends I plan to participate in.

1.Clear Purse.

The Chanel logo prevents the clear bag from looking cheap. But I'm not sure if the highstreet version works. Also I'm afraid subway thieveswould be more prone to steal my wallet with the ability to see exactly were it's placed in my bag. 2.Futuristic tights :

Balenciaga runway American Apparel version. Although I've heard these tights stretch alotttt with wear but, I only plan to wear them a few times.

Ode to the Olsens

Hate them or love them, the Olsen twins are the most influential celebrities in fashion right now, other than Ms. Moss. The twins have been heckled for wearing soo much fur, but they were vindicated as the runways were awash in fur (faux and real) this season. Here are some of my favorite looks.

MK wore this in Soho during Fashion Week. As a New Yorker, I know it was cold as hell but she looked cute despite the bland tabloid bloggers comments.

The twins are great b/c they can incorporate high fashion trends into their signature looks. Ashley pulled of this Prada inspired turban w/o looking like a walking trend by keeping everything else classic, her signature look.

What a sophisticated spring outfit crisp, clean, and toughened up by black riding boots.

MK with another hit, and the jazz shoes I want so badly. I love the super short tee and tights combo. I wear it all the time, although I know I shouldn't.

After seeing a picture on the left, I was inspired to purchase a vest. I want one similar to the vest on the top to wear in the summer as a shirt like Ashley.

Although I admire MK style more than Ashley's b/c of her fashion risks and quirky style, I'm more of an Ashley.

I tend to mix tradition pieces with trends. I wore a dress/leather jacket outfit before I saw this picture of Ashley and love to wear big tees with heels so I don't look too over dressed for school.

Sometimes, I have to draw the line. Here is a MK with a look I love but could never pull off. Are you more of a MK or an Ashley?

Shopping Online

I've only purchased a few items online and they've all been poor to mediocre. I purchased some clothes from Urban that I never wear, a pair of riding boots that soles cracked, and a cheap scarf. Today I took the plunge back into online shopping.

I saw this shirt at Urban but passed it up. Now I think it's kind of cute. As an African-American, I have policy against buying items with white faces on them. This shirt borders on breaking that rule but I decided to go for it. I wish they'd used Naomi's name as well.

It'll be so fun to wear with a scarf, gym shoes, and simple jeans.

I'm thinking about buying this DVF dress on sale. I couldn't wear this print in a cooperate/political environment and it's too dressy for everyday but this deal is too good to pass up. I just hate buying things without trying them on. Also this dress will be identified with a specific season, although I don't care.

I love stilettos but, those shoes are for girls who have a towncar, can afford a taxi, or live in a town where people drive. Since I am neither I tend to stay away from stilettos. These shoes look rich and are sexy without killing one's feet.

I'm not sure about these shoes. The detailing looked better initially.

Waiting for Sales

I like to play "chicken" with retailers. In other words, I pass up full priced items in hopes, they will go on sale. Usually I win and get a great deal because my style is odd and I go for the things most people won't buy. This Urban sweater cost almost $200 full priced. It was marked down to around $100. I still thought it was too expensive, and decided to wait for a further reduction. When I returned to the store in a few weeks, it was gone. I decided I had to have the sweater, after seeing an employee wearing it but,the color selection on ebay was disappointing.

The black and white brings out the print, while the black and blue diminishes the print and the gray and yellow distracts from it with an ugly color combination. Yesterday, I found a similar sweater for $15.oo. I wish that I had purchased the sweater from Urban when it cost $100. Although both sweaters look exactly the same, the quality of the piece from urban is markedly better.

I'm thinking about buying these shoes full price. I waited for similar shoes to go on sale and now I can't find them anywhere.

Target

Although I promised myself that I wouldn't buy anything from the PS for Target line, I found myself on a train to Target in the Bronx yesterday. As expected, I didn't buy anything from the PS line, but I found some cute shoes.

Usually I don't like wedge sandals. They always seem to cutesy for my style, like the ones above.These will work in the spring with thick socks or in the summer. In the store, I felt like I'd seen similar shoes in a magazine but couldn't remember where. Now I'm pretty sure Gemma Ward wore something similar in a Prada ad.

I also purchased black ballet flats. I was unsure about buying such basic shoes. A lack of basics usually pushes me to put together unusual combinations that work somehow. I decided to get the flats and use them sparingly to accentuate my print dresses. Non-basics weren't quite working with them. Imagine a plaid trapeze dress with cowboy boots.

Where Have all the Style Stars Gone?

Celebrity Outfits are my favorite feature of Fashion Week. I was waiting patiently to see what the famed Mischa Barton would cook up this year, as last year her multiple outfit changes earned her a article in the NY Times. I don't know if all the rehab has gotten to the stars or if the pictures are being tightly controlled to force people to buy tabloids instead of accessing blogs for free. Regardless, I wasn't inspired by any of the clebs outfits during FW and ditto for the Oscars. 3 celebs stuck out from the sea of blah in my mind.

Hilary looks great in this dress. The length and cut prevented the sparkles from seeming too 80's prom. Ignore the scribble from PerezHilton.com the dress is cute. The detailing is impeccable on the Cavalli gown.

Pussy Cat Dolls: I love the interpretation of the Grecian gown that the lead singer (three from right) is wearing. The Grecian look has been worn by too many people as of late, but the colors add a nice twist. The strings ruin the gown on the far left by making it look trashy. I would have preferred to see the strings removed and cloth extending across the entire chest.

Mandy you're not at a picnic, so please don't dress like it. Floral print is tricky to pull of at a formal event and Ms. Moore failed.

Jennifer Hudson: You are beautiful and I applaud what you're doing for black women and heavy-set women everywhere but; this is the same dress you wore to the SAG and Golden Globes in a different color. Please switch it up. I'm bored and soon people are going to get over the novelty of a curvy woman being able to pick out a well tailored dress.

Sunglasses

I want a vast collection of sunglasses to make my wardrobe more varied. I love these aviators, a classic statement piece. The picture on the top is the coloring I want.

I was thinking about buying a pair of wayfares but realized they are going to go out of style soon. They only have press because they were gifted to celebrities, not b/c of their style. Big glasses make people seem glam so, their going to stay around for awhile.

I passed these vintage glasses up today b/c they are so similar to a pair I have from Target.

I Heart Vintage!!!

So, I haven't been posting much as of late because of the lack of inspiring clothes in the high street stores. Cute, but how many times have we seen that dress? And the poor quality and banality of the Target GO lines are so discouraging that I'm going to avoid the dissapointment I expereinced after seeing Luella et al and avoid Proenza.
Everything has started to seen redundant, the pieces in moderately boutiques like Big Drop and Intermix don't seem worth it, and there is no way I could afford any designer pieces. I had to do "research" for an article about shopping for vintage which was basically an excuse for me to go shopping. I planned on going to thirteen shops in one day and ended up spending my entire Saturday in one shop. I was drawn to the 70's rack. I wish it was because of my unique style but, it's more likely that I loved the rack b/c of what designers have been showing as of late. I found this great 1983 vintage Gucci. This bag is great because it's a unique status piece. I've been thinking about getting a designer bag but didn't really want to buy something that everyone has. I'm not going to find a million people walking around w/Chinatown knockoffs like the LV and modern Gucci.

I wish I had a digital camera to take pictures of the rest. I'm going to try to borrow a friends tomorrow. I purchased a circa 70's yellow sundress with macrome detailing that I'm wearing today w/a tee. I also got a yellow and orange print, mid-calf, babydoll, shift dress. I'm trying to inject some color into my wardrobe.

Today I found a beautiful vintage mink stole. The shop owner gave my a discount on the stole and a free shirt b/c of the article.

I would make the dress younger with several strands of pearls and a black minidress. For day to day wear once it gets warmer I'll pair it w/flats, destroyed, dark wash, or skinny jeans, and a tee. I also got a geometric print vintage wrap dress, and dress w/macrame detailing.

And yes it's real. If PETA throws red paint on me to symbolize blood, someone is going to bleed for real.

Here is a copy of the article of the article that ran in my campus publication. They want me to do a bi-monthly article about fashion in nyc, so exciting. My next article will be "How to Shop for Vintage Clothes in NYC"
Between February 2nd and 9th droves of people will migrate to NYC for the bi-annual Super Bowl of US fashion shows, Fashion Week. Publicity-seeking celebrities and industry insiders will convene under the hallowed tents of Bryant Park while those without an illusive ticket to the invitation-only event will flock tot he web for next season’s fashion forecast. This Fashion Week will generate extra media attention due to the proliferation of controversy surrounding models' weight and its role in generating unhealthy body images. Fashion insiders, medical professionals, and journalists alike are waiting to see if fashion week's governing council and it's president Diane Von Furstennburg's ban of alcohol, encouragement of food at shows, and curfew for underage models will alter shows’ or models’ appearances.
Meanwhile, looks from the Fall/Winter runway and their numerous high street clones are due to reach stores this month. Many designers, including Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld, claimed they did not watch fashion reality show sensation Project Runway. However, some younger designer's, such as Zac Posen and Behnaz Sarafpour, presented looks reminiscent of PR contestants' signature designs. Those who watched the show might recognize Angela's rosettes and Laura's sparkly cocktail frocks in their collections. Since Sienna Miller was recently photographed in two gowns with rosettes, one can also expect this trend to filter down to cheaper formal wear. Three major trends from fall's runway are projected to find their way to the streets: Menswear, Primary Colors, and Space-Age/Dominatrix. Expect to see menswear pieces such as blazers, vests, and wide leg pants as you stroll down the street this season. Literal interpretations of the runway are usually reserved for the pages of Vogue and Elle. Most fashion devotees won't be storing their skinny jeans, shopping in the men's department, and wearing the trend head to toe. Instead, you can expect to see last season's skinny jeans worn with curve-hugging blazers and vests. However, wide legged pants will break up the sea of skinny jeans thanks to trend setters Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan, who were spotted wearing this shape.
Primary colors also made a strong showing on the runway. Canary yellow, cobalt blue, and candy-apple green will be interjected into this winter's dominant black, white, and red. After the disappointing display of back toback white dresses on the Golden Globe's red carpet, the re-introduction ofcolor is being welcomed by fashion devotees. This trend is wallet friendly so expect it to have a strong presence on the street in the months tocome. For example, shoes and purses in bright colors are being sold for less than $20. Ina carry over from last season, patent leather versions of primary color accessories will also be on the fashion radar. Dolce and Gabbana, Balenciaga (the powerhouse behind the much photographed bag toted by Mary-Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie), and Versace runways' favored a futuristic/dominatrix tone. Most people won't be walking down the street in PVC outfits. To channel this trend without looking like a streetwalker or a Dungeons and Dragons convention attendee, fashionsitas will wear lucite or fetish heels. Few but the most fashion forward will eschew this trend for day. Instead, anticipate spotting this look on the feet of Manhattan's clubhoppers.
As for the upcoming season, fashion editors have reported their disappointment after viewing the Spring/Summer 07 collection. Apparently, designers have not introduced anything radical, unlike the shape-shifting of Fall/Winter 06. While this may be a disappointment to the fashion elite, this lack of change is a boon for those of us without an unlimited budget. On the whole, this season is about enhancing already owned pieces – not purchasing a new wardrobe.
Despite all the fuss, industry insiders are quick to acknowledge the diminishing importance of the runway. The surge in 80's inspired tapered pants and skinny jeans was inspired by one person: Kate Moss. Designers understand that their creations have to be photographed on celebrities to create true demand. The runway’s influence may not be dead, but if your looking for an outfit to wear to class, your best bet is to scan a copy of US Weekly and leave the rest for the pages of Vogue.

Vindicated

The Lanvin dress Ellen Pompeo wore to the SAG awards has been ridiculed in the tabloids. Despite their asinine comments, I love the dress and blogged about a few days ago. Now my choice has been vindicated by Vogue's 10 best dressed of the week list. Ellen is number 2. Kate has reclaimed her rightful spot at the top of the list. She is wearing a cheetah fur coat. On the web it's listed as fur. I hope Kate has decided to ditch her recent PETA conversion.

Stealing from the Hipsters.

First we took the Hispsters skinny jeans and eyeglasses, what next? Why fur hats of course. They have't reached uptown yet, but I want one. I have decided this season will be about acessories for me because; I haven't seen anything new. Looking at clips from the F/W shows, I guess next season will be the same. The pieces are beautiful, but in the same muted colors. There has been a shape change though. Instead of an inflated top and skinny bottom, designers are inflating everything. "Great" for a woman's figure.

During the bleak winter months it's often difficult to think about shorts (especially in NYC). But, a recently picture of Nicole Richie reminded me of an ultimatum I made. By the summer I want my inner thighs to be small enough to wear shorts w/o them getting caught in my thighs. I am a healthy size 6/8 depending on the brand. Even when I wore a 2 and ran cross-country, my thighs stuck together causing my shorts to bunch up in an unsightly manner. I refuse to accept that I'm genetically doomed to have thunder thighs and have started researching ways to lose fat in that specific area. Of course I had to include the classic Kate picture that inspired the trend. As demonstrated by the recent picture of Nicole, I'm sure this trend is going to stay strong.
I might be able to pull these off.

I went shopping today in New York and could find nothing to buy. The high streets are filled with the skinny bottom large top combo and I'm sick of it. I went to Chinatown to buy a fake Balenciaga bag but couldn't bring myself to do it. Seeing the bag in the stall next to the other fakes took its allure away. Hopefully, the designers will produce something fresh this season or we'll be seeing more of the same. I understand why fashion insiders always tout change. As an avid magazine reader I',m sick of seeing the same things. Imagine how redundant it must get to look at the same clothes everyday for a WHOLE season. No wonder why fashion is about out with the old and in with the new.
P.S. The Amanda Bynes picture is supposed to add a little humor. Her label overload is horrendous. Two branded items in one outfit is a HUGE no no. Sweetie we know your balling despite your inability to do anything but bubblegum roles. You don't need to prove it with this fashion pau.

New Bag?

I am SICK of my bag. I have been wearing the same bag since I purchased it during H&M's 25% off weekend after Thanksgiving sale. It's a a chic briefcase sized black tote with crock print that can be carried on the wrist or shoulder. Great,but I want something new. In the line at Urban, I saw a woman with this beautiful Marc Jacobs Hudson bag. It hasn't been getting much press coverage unlike the coveted Stam so; I figured it would be cheap. Boy was I wrong $1,275. I'm going to keep an eye on the bag in hopes that the price will go down once the S/S 07 bags are released. I like the Hudson more than the Stam and it won't be assoiciated with a particulat season b/c of it's low profile. I started to look for alternatives. This LAMB bag is cute and "only"$550. I plan to buy my 1st luxury item this semester but, I feel as if this tote will only remind that I couldn't afford the Hudson. Also, I'm scared to buy a luxury good for fear that I'll get tired of it. Maybe I'll get this classic Louis Vuitton although these bags seem rather trite as of now. I don't care if most people will think it's fake because, I'll know and that's all that matters. Maybe all I need is a new wallet to spice things up.This groom is cute but has no card holders, a must for me. This one is more functional although, I'm more partial to the smaller one. Maybe I'll find something nice at Century 21 the mecca of designer goods on sale.

In anticipation of Fashion Week I decided to recap the best dressed from the recent couture shows in Paris.

Dita: Displayed her sartorial talent by incorporating her classic pin-up girl style with a trend(the bubble skirt).

Proof that money doesn't buy style. I looked better than that last night rocking my dress from the Zara clearance rack ($24.99). These heiress look horrible. The culprit in the middle is a Hearst (Harper's Bazaar) heiress. I can't believe Tinsley (left) was covered in Vogue. Who cares if she has a line of bags coming out. She still has no style.

About a month ago I saw a picture of one of my fashion icons (Mary-Kate not Ashlee of course) with a bennie. I basically want anything that Mary-Kate wears, other than that horrendous tablecloth/dress she stepped out of the house with a few weeks ago. Anyway, I decided to stop by Urban on my way to work and was ecstatic to see the same bennie I drooled over. I can't wait to wear it to Fashion Week although; I feel unoriginal b/c I appropriated the look. I enjoy buying things and then seeing pictures of Kate, Sienna, Nicole, etc wearing the same thing later. It's fun to know we're on the same wavelength without copying. I'm aiming for a boho-punk vibe....hope I can pull it off. Also I hope the Olsens show up at Fashion Week as they're always sartorially inspiring.

Factory Girl

I have been waiting for Factory Girl to come out for months. I was especially upset when the release date got pushed back. The prominence of mod style and Sienna's 50 million magazine covers have cemented this desire in my head. None of my friends have heard of the movie b/c it hasn't been advertised on TV. Guess I'll be going to see it own my own.

Ever since Sienna was forced to change her style after it was appropriated by millions, her day wear has left much to be desired. But this is a rare cute look. I wore an outfit similar to this a couple of days ago. She was criticized b/c her dress was short enough to be a shirt. Once again the tabloids have no fashion sense. Bland. Bland. Bland.Sienna has gotten allot of criticism for this outfit but, I think it's fashion forward and most people don't get that. She refrains from wearing a literal 80's interpretation by keeping the outfit monochromatic.
Sienna' s evening wear is usually flawless.

The Black Pucci dress and flower Marchesa dress are among two of my favorites this season. Ahhh the gorgeous W layout. Sienna is truly stylish because she can channel several personas and make all of them work.

Glasses Worthy of a Journalist.

If you haven't heard I'm kind of a journalist now. I need to buy some hot glasses to go along with this new role. W/o prescription of course as I don't actually need them.

Cute with a black outfit.

Subtle advertisement. Who doesn't love it. Although these hipster appropriated glasses are starting to get on my nerves. When 40 year olds in Indiana start rocking them....you know it's over. Yes I saw them and they were D&G. I want something a little more classic.

I love all three pairs, stylish in a non-blatantly overdone trend way. I know the hipsters must hate that everyone has made one of their trademarks trite. I was so upset when I found out leopard was going to be a trend this season. Last year I got compliments on my leopard print flats all the time. This year nobody says anything b/c everyone has them decreasing their uniquness. I want a sign that says "I wore this before it was cool." I'm sure the hipsters and I can come up with a sign visitation agreement w/o getting the lawyers involved.

Best Week Ever

1. I'm going to motherfucking Fashion Week. Although I'm going to see a no-name designer after I have completed training for the campus paper and written a article, I'll be able to get into Marc Jacobs and such next year.
2. My 1st article pertaining to fashion was approved this week. My school newspaper wants me to have a weekly column.

I wish I had a digital camera to document this. My parents have promised me one for my B-Day in March. I guess I can wait until then.

SAG Awards

A couple of days late but still relevant. People I loved. My top 5 and worst dressed of the evening.

1. Rachel McAdams

Ok so the dress may have been a little to mini for the SAG awards but, it wasn't the Oscars or even the Golden Globes and her hair is so adorable.

2. Ellen Pompeo in Lanvin.

I usually hate what she wears but she hit the nail on the head with this number. The Grecian gown accented by the earthy neckline elegant and unique.
3. Katherine Heigl

This actress looks like a 1950's screen goddess and does well when she plays up to that in traditional empire waste dresses. The color and accented shoulder strap make a potentially boring dress fab.

4. Rinko Kikuchi in Chanel.

She is incorporating the distinct creativity of Asian street style without going Bai Ling on us. I love how she is able to make funky high fashion instead of trashy.

5. Mary-Louise Parker in J. Mendel

Once again quirky high fashion.

Worst. Felicity Huffman

Boo.I know she doesn't have a stylist and her studio sends her clothes but, this is an outfit for grocery shopping....not for the red carpet of an awards show. Additionally the bell shape makes her look fat. Yes I have worn a trapeze dress and no I'm not a size 0 but I'm not on the red carpet preparing to have my image broadcast to millions. If you're not going to dress right for yourself do it for the children...prevent eye trauma.

Vogue's Picks

Vogue has posted its weekly best dressed list. Gwen is number one and I agree with this choice. Gwen's true beauty shines with the minimal makeup and uncharacteristically toned down dress. Although she has great fashion sense, her usually outfits distract from her natural assets.

Naomi Campbell is 2nd. She has been criticized in the tabloids for this outfit but; I think it's fab. Often tabloid criticism is a sign of a fashion forward outfit, as US Weekly aims to scare all celebs into dressing blandly.

3:The construction of Kate Blanchett's suit is enviable. Because she is a fashion forward dresser ,I thought she would use the couture shows as an opportunity to go wild. It's the perfect environment. But sadly, I was disappointed. Here are the rest of the outfits.

Something to spice up my winter black. My Chanel earrings make any outfit go from blah to ahh in a second. Their accessories are always cheap/fun in a classy way.

I want this "statement" piece. I've decided to abstain from purchasing anymore fake luxury goods. After having several of them break and spending a whole day looking for a fake Chanel 2.55 bag in Chinatown to no avail. I realized that fakes are evil. They are constructed poorly and break easily. More important, they decrease the cultural value of luxury goods. If everyone and their moma totes Louie than, it's no longer special. But for $71 I'll have to pass on the "statement". The "fake" bag's priced shocked me. Imitation purses in Chinatown cost $20 maximum.

Men as Style Icons

For the likes of Posh, Sienna, and Vanessa Bruno men are more than stylish accessories. These ladies have to compete with their stylish significant others for the spotlight. Menswear and androgyny have been creeping into my wardrobe. I was inspired to buy my first piece of menswear by the vest on the left. I searched through several stores and was finally able to find one in the corner of Forever 21. Luckily it was my size. Jude Law definitely inspires sartorially. Mary-Kate sights Johnny Depp as her style icon.

And,I have a sweater similar to David Beckham's. As androgyny continues to dominate, I expect more women will turn to these male style stars for direction in addition to their female significant others..

My friends often disparage me for reading magazines because; they are largely composed of ads, especially during the months at the beginning of the new season. I usually ignore my friends because half of the fun of magazines is looking at the beautiful photography and appreciating the creativity that went into planning the makeup, hair, background, model, and of course clothing that went into the ad. Additionally, they all watch TV which is filled with commercials and product placement. I like ads so much that I use them as covers for my binders. In anticipation of the March's magazines here is a preview of some of my favorite ads for the new season.

The blogs have only been covering the Lindsay Lohan for Mui Mui on the left. I think they were largely influenced by their dislike for Lindsay and were thrilled to see the ad didn't resemble her. The colors are great and the rag doll idea is creative but; I was disappointed to see that Lindsay was unrecognizable. I personally could care less about celbs behavior. Who cares if Lindsay is drunk, as long as she look fab while stumbling around. I don't see stars as role models and people should stop expecting them to be. Anyway when I found these pictures I was pleasantly surprised. The colors and creativity is still there but; Lindsay is recognizable.

Edgy but definitely wearable. I love it. I love the Miss Sixty models. They always have the waifish; I'm just too concerned with other hip things to eat, look. Not the I count my calories, have a nutritionist, and am starving look. Trust me there is a difference. Since my naturally curvy body will never be able to achieve this look I live vicariously through the Miss Sixty models. As I'm a political junkie...Go Edwards... I love that Diesel is discussing the global warming issue, even in the most trivial way. Look at the left corner of the ad.

This reminds me of a pass the energy dance I used to do with my friends whenever techno music came on at dances or a lasso. You chose. Either way it makes the classic Hermes bag look energetic. Even with an oompahloompa tan Gisele kills it. I guess the colors are meant to highlight the dress and her natural Brazilian beauty. Cavalli has a history of color altering. The house made Kate's skin red in last season's ads. As always Kaiser Karl managed to make Chanel's clothing look completely relevant for today's young woman. I would wear this entire outfit including the much discussed hotpants, if my thighs were smaller. The model's hair is hot although; I would have preferred to see Irina Lazareanu. I'm a huge fan of her look, she fits into the Miss Sixty category I described above, was discovered by Kate Moss, and opened and closed this season's Chanel show. I hope she knocks Gemma off her undeserved pedestal...sorry she looks like an alien.

The much discussed Scarlett Johansson for Louis Vuitton campaign. She is beautiful and I love the milk maiden look they were attempting to achieve with this campaign. The bags are questionable. Some look like the bags in Chinatown with grommets and metal plates with designers' names added to the bag. In other words it would look cheap w/o the starlet campaign, beautiful colors, and magazine backdrop. That's the feeling I got from the campaign as a whole, as if Scarlett is usued to compensate for the bags.The tote is cute for school. For me it's almost too chill to wear with my everyday look. And, I would be afraid of getting it dirty on the subway but; Louis Vuitton isn't made for strap hangers. The LV sign incorporated into "love" is adorable through. Great V-Day present anyone?
I was the most disappointed with this bag. First of, I usually don't like the idea of jean bags. More than one jean piece in an outfit looks bad. Since most people wear jeans everyday this bag is just setting you up to commit a fashion offense. Additionally, jean bags with dresses distract form the beauty of the dress. Secondly, this bag reminds me of the patchwork jeans that I wore in high school and look back on in horror.

Love the outfit and how the model's positioning simulates movement.

Dior Homme. This ad is relevant as more women than men wear the line. It highlights the androgyny trend that's been pervading the streets and moving onto the runway as of late. One comment. I miss Kate, I guess without any drug scandals she isn't as relevant. And i guess fashion is cyclical. Using one model too often would be boring. As Kate was featured in last seasons Versace, Dior, Longchamp, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton ads to name a few. I guess it's she needs a rest. Just not too long of one I hope.

Suspenders and Overalls

When combing through the sales rack at Old Navy during Black Tuesday, I came across a pair of overalls. Not the kind that are traditional staples of carpenters closets. something along these lines.

I debated purchasing the jeans for awhile. This is atypical for me. I usually follow an "love it rule" when shopping. If I don't immediately love a piece when I see it, I don't buy it. Ultimately I decided not to get the overalls for two reasons. First, I purchased overalls during an H&M half off sale during the holiday season. I have only worn them once. As suspenders simulate the effects of overall, I was hesitant to rebuy I look that I haven't worn yet. I envisioned them looking like the picture on the left. In reality I believe my outfit was closer to the one on the right. I 'm still trying to work the suspenders into my wardrobe and am debating on the overalls. Meanwhile I'm still trying to save money for a digital camera & vintage Gucci suitcase. What's a girl to do? Maybe I can become a dominatrix. One of my suitemates makes $90/hour whipping guys. No sex involved and space-age/dom. gear is in this year:)

Cover of the Month

For two months straight W 's cover is my favorite. Nicole's ethereal beauty contrasted with Daniel's rugged handsomeness is striking. I was temped to see Casino Royale solely for Daniel but, decided to abstain until the movie hits cable.

My least favorite cover is Vogue.

Renee is a beautiful woman. The simple grey sweater is supposed to highlight this. But, it's to bland for the cover of Vogue. February's newstand Bazaar was too similar to the Oct. 06 Mischa Barton cover for me.

Although, the subscriber cover is beautiful. I tend to favor Bazaar's subscriber covers. They are a bit less mass market and more high fashion. Like the W cover, Bazaar is contrasting the ethereal (Drew's dress) with rugged handsomeness (the city).

When Juicy 1st came out I bought a knock off suit from New York and Company. This was a time in my life when I didn't know the difference or care. I also wanted a jean suit and wore Baby Phat Jeans...but i've tried to erase that period from my mind. A couple of years ago I started jonesing for the real suit. Not in the horrid Cali powder blue or bubble gum pink but a proper New York navy or black. This winter I finally got the suit. Although I usually am not a sporty dresser, I feel comfy and stylish in my Juicy.

Sometimes I care about getting the original/Sometimes I don't. I have an imitation of this jacket. They have some other cute products. I saw these at Nordstrom Rack. I decided to pass $190 on sale.

Tyra has been criticized allot for her recent weight gain and she's fighting back. Although I think this is rather hypocritical. She berates the media's standard of beauty on her talk show and then promotes it on Top Model. Although, this may have changed since I stopped watching the show seasons ago. When I 1st saw the photo of Tyra I figured that the poor angling added weight. I still believe the original swimsuit photo misrepresented her. Some bloggers believe the People cover was altered to make her look slimmer. I doubt it. If someone used photoshop to make me look slimmer, I would have chopped of more than that.

After looking at this recent picture of Hilary Duff all over the glossies and blogs I want to write about luggage. Look like a jetsetter with the Vuitton Damier (below) or Hillary's Monogram.

LeSport Sac + LV is a masterful display of high low. She makes Louie look young and fresh.

I also like that she's daring to be a brunette in Hollywood where everyone is blond. It makes her look mature and less bubble gum. At the airport I almost had any envy attack when i saw someone check a Gucci suitcase. This is a briefcase I've been eyeing... I would never actually travel with a luxury bag until I can fly in a private jet for fear it would be stolen. This fashionista isn't paranoid, Lil' Kim got her Louie luggauge stolen at the airport.

Designer Jeans

Seven jeans came on the scene in 2000. They revived the luxury denim trend. Their brand has spun off numerous luxury brands all aiming to draw customers with pockets and stitching that scream "I PAID MONEY FOR THIS I'M BETTER THAN YOU." I wanted

to participate in this trend but couldn't b/c the jeans were so low that only half of my Beyonce sized butt fit into the jeans...believe it my old roommate has a picture of me with half of my butt hanging out of her Sevens. At a questionable store in Harlem I snagged a pair of Trues...turns out the Trues were false. They fit poorly and I felt embarrassed wearing fakes. I wanted to participate in the trend so badly that I purchased men's True Religion jeans. Which only required some rolling to fit which was OK b/c rolling was in. At least there was no crack cleavage.

I found some used citizens for $8 and purchased them despite the fact I could barely walk in them...let alone sit down. As of now I'm over designer jeans.

Except these b/c they are adorable and Victoria is a style goddess.The logo here is an object not a letter or squiggly line. I sold all the ill fitting jeans and am thinking about selling the men's Trues b/c they aren't flattering. Let's be honest low rise and wiskering does a number on a girl's thighs. Kate has moved on from "ad jeans". As Kate goes so goes the world. These are my favorite jeans. I got them at a mall in Jersey for $9 when visiting a friend during Thanksgiving. Good memories, crack coverage, and a great price. The perfect match.

*Note to men: Unless you are trying to attract another man, please don't EVER wear designer jeans. It looks like your trying too hard which is never cute. A nice pair of Levis are hot. The only exception is Diesil. For some reason these are OK.

Hot Technology

So I'm definatly not a techie...I can barely work the remote. But, the line between fashion and technology has been slowly disappearing. A hot gadget is the newest and most functional accessory. I hate Apple b/c they produce crappy products however people keep returning. The company produces hot products that are status symbols. Designers and other companies have noticed this and want a piece.This ad is FIRE. Although I don't want the D&G phone; everyone has the razor.I have it posted in my room. I could only find a small picture b/c there has been allot of controversy surrounding the ad. Many have accused the company of glorifying violence. Whatever it's hot. They're hot.

I think there would be less controversy if there were gun in the picture.

Anything Kate is selling I want.

This phone is cute.

This mp3 is a fun alternative to the Ipod. It also comes in neon green and pink.

The Blackberry is a classic hot accessory in that I'm important and powerful way.
There have been some disappointments though. The DVF phone is ugly.

If I See Another Ugg

So I live in New York and I'm from Chicago. It gets cold here. I know, but that never gives anyone the excuse to wear the monstrosity posing as a winter insulator know as the Ugg boot.
Don't let the hot model distract you from the foulness of the boots.

And yes a few style stars ie Sienna, Kate, SJP ect. were snapped in them but that was years ago. They've moved on... so should you. In fact the trend is so old I could only find this cruddy star pic.
But you say "nobody in New York especially not trendy students would wear them." But you're wrong that's all they wear.

I want these Miss Sixty boots but feel they are to dressy for my everyday look. And too expensive to merit a splurge for the weekend only. Or these.

White always adds a nice pop during the winter. The no white after rule is for the 50+ set.

These are cute although not the warmest. Add thick socks to make them work on cold days. You can make your rainboots winter worthy too with thick socks.

This pair embodies one of this seasons major trends. I have a pink pair w/pink flowers but couldn't find a picture as I purchased them last year.I've always wanted these Frye boots. I should buy the boots b/c they're on sale at Urban but nothing can beat the banged up cowboy boots I found at a thrift shop for $1.50.

Moral: Friends don't let friends wear Uggs when there are so many options out there. Save an Ugg wearer today!!! For the sake of disclosure I may be biased. The 1st time I saw Uggs they were paired w/a mini skirt and that vision is sered in my mind.

Discount Lines: Gold or Gimmick

Like every broke fashionista, I've gotten excited about the Victor and Rolf, Luella, Paul & Joe ect. lines. Like every broke fashionista, I loyally went to the stores to check out the designers' wears...unlike most I refused to get up and wait in lines...mornings just aren't my thing. Unlike most broke fashionistas, Bazaar, teenVogue, Lucky, and Paper I'm always disappointed by the lines. Don't get me wrong. I love high street stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Urban but I always find the "designer" lines to be rather uninspiring. After going to H&M for Victor and Rolf and Target for Luella I ended up buying clothes from the stores regular lines. Maybe I get my hopes up b/c of the names behind the clothing. Often the designer duds for high street are similar to runway versions with a few different details. But details make or break the clothing. A few subtle tweaks can ruin a piece. The Proenza clothes are adorable but ordinary, most fashionistas already have the skinny jeans, drape dress, blazer, and bermudas. The one exception is this beautiful coat.

and corset. Although, I'm scared to buy them b/c everyone will know where their from and I hate that. Maybe these lines aren't made to appeal to the fashinistas. With the exception of the Stella McCartney line I question if high end designers can do high street effectively. Is this clothing all that people are making it out to be or ordinary duds with designer names? Target is setting up a special store in the Village for a few days only. With the Australian Open finals coming up in a few hours, I was inspired to post. Two fashion icons and powerhouses are going to meet up...this should be good. Personally I can't wait to see what they're wearing. Maria is on the cover of TeenVogue and was named one of 2006's style icons by Vogue. Personally I think Maria is overhyped in terms of her fashion sense. Ok, she is a successful female athlete and still manages to look feminine. Give her a prize. But don't call her a fashion icon. Dita Von Teese Overrated Stripper or Style Star

One of my style icons is Dita Von Tesse. She channels 50's pinup style and is Sexy without being trashy. This is difficult to do...look to Mariah and Beyonce for proof.

She even managed to make Marylin Manson look like a cute accessory when they were together.

Dita was a model in the Jean-Paul Gaultier FW 07 couture show in Paris. Demonstrating her status as a muse.

Photos in Blender (lad mag) and in her burlesque costumes or lack there of only add to her mystic in my mind. Am i delusional overrated stripper or style star?

Excessories Mayhem

I'm trying to save money this semester. As nothing really novel has been produced this season, I'll think I'll be fine with a few new accessories.
With all the recent 80's references I'm convinced the Ray Ban Wayfarer is going to come back in style. Get in on the trend early Mary-Kate and Chloe Sevigny have been spotted wearing them. This pair is from Urban Outfitters ($14).
If only I had $750 to spend on this adorable Chanel bracelet. It embodies casual lux. I'm sure Lindsay will be wearing this soon. Maybe it'll remind her of the fond days in rehab.

I don't usually wear gym shoes but, how can you not love these colors ??? Bape shoes can run upwards of $300. I want knock offs without the APE logo. It's about the color for me not the brand. Although I'd never wear a fake McQueen skull scarf. I'd rather pass on this trend than wear the fake.

Spring/ Summer 07 The Season of Blah?

Last season we were wooed by huge boots, chunky jackets, and pants that merited the This season blah... no new shapes...endless Project Runway inspired trends (rosettes and sparkle overload ie Laura Bennet) Overall the runway's were rather uninspired. On the positive side this means you'll be shelling out less. Despite the criticism a few interesting and easy on the wallet trends emerged
1. primary colors
expect the basic black, white, and red of last season to be joined by canary yellow, candy apple green, and cobalt blue. Think colors you can find in the 8 box of crayons not neon or pastels. Your wallet will appreciate that this trend is limited to accessories.
2. Future
Dolce and Gabbana, Versace, and Balenciaga (the house behind the much photographed bag on the hands of Nicole, Kate, and Mary Kate) favored a futuristic/dominatrix tone. Most people won't be walking down the street in PVC outfits. To channel this trend without looking like a streetwalker or a person walking to the D&D convention wear lucite or fetish heels. Here's your long awaited excuse to wear hooker heels.
3. Menswear
Menswear will never go out of style. It made a particularly strong showing last season and it's still going strong. As in most instances this trend is NOT meant to be interpreted literal. Do not wear head to toe menswear unless you have been doing so prior to this season and have your own established style. Or are Katie Homles attempting to chanel Jackie OBut watch out
Buy menswear inspired pieces a vest, blazer, button up are all great investment pieces because they go w/everything and will never go out of style. Try to contrast these pieces w/fem accessories...the peep-toe heels from last season are great.
